A massive wildfire has ravaged Dunwich Heath in Suffolk, destroying wildlife habitats that may take up to 25 years to recover. The blaze started around 5 pm on Wednesday and quickly spread, engulfing an area equivalent to about 140 football pitches near the Sizewell B nuclear power plant. The fire impacted parts of the RSPB’s Minsmere nature reserve, home to rare birds and reptiles.
Adam Rowlands, the Suffolk area manager for the RSPB, mentioned that the habitat recovery could take several years. Evacuations were carried out for 200 caravans in the blaze’s path, with holidaymakers waking up to officials alerting them. Firefighters have been battling the blaze for three days, with multiple crews on the scene.
The EDF spokesperson confirmed that the fire did not affect operations at the Sizewell B power station. The National Trust, responsible for Dunwich Heath since 1968, expressed deep concern over the catastrophic impact on the site. The fire, one of the largest in Suffolk’s history, continues to be a challenge due to changing wind conditions.
The wildfire has caused extensive damage, impacting rare species of birds and reptiles. The National Trust emphasized the urgent need for climate adaptation measures and warned against delaying action to reduce emissions. Firefighters are making progress, with additional support from London Fire Brigade. The situation remains stable but unpredictable due to changing wind patterns.
