The United States has issued a warning about Russia’s potential plan for a military “provocation” aimed at testing the strength of NATO, as per recent reports. Washington has allegedly informed Warsaw that the provocation could involve attacks on critical infrastructure in Poland using missiles and drones, or in a more extreme scenario, Russian troops crossing into NATO territory.
Sources close to Polish President Karol Nawrocki revealed that Washington indicated the planned provocation might occur within a few months, with the goal of escalating tensions and disrupting Western military and financial aid to Ukraine. Last month, allies collectively pledged $4 billion in military assistance to Ukraine.
A source linked to Mr. Nawrocki stated that the US consistently updates Poland on new Russian schemes for a conventional attack on NATO’s eastern frontier, which includes Poland. Security sources from Onet outlined potential scenarios such as drone strikes on critical infrastructure or simulated air assaults. The most extreme scenario could involve a “hybrid attack in the border region” by Russian or Belarusian forces, according to a Polish intelligence source.
There are concerns that Russia could present any incident as a mistake, like troops unintentionally entering Polish territory due to a GPS malfunction. Polish sources mentioned that Russia might anticipate pressuring Poland, with US mediation, to negotiate with Russia or Belarus instead of resorting to force. This strategy could lead Moscow to demand an end to Western aid for Ukraine in exchange for withdrawing from Polish territory.
An ambassador from one of Poland’s NATO allies and a member of the Polish defense ministry highlighted the significant risk of a provocation in Poland or the Baltic states. A Baltic security source informed The Telegraph that discussions about such plans were ongoing in Moscow, with potential attacks launching from Kaliningrad or Belarus.
Recently, a report by the International Institute of Strategic Studies suggested that Russia likely utilized shadow ships to deploy drones over Europe, monitoring military sites and testing NATO nations’ air defenses. The report documented 144 suspected drone sightings across Europe between 2024 and 2026, with sightings peaking in late 2025 and causing temporary airport closures in several European countries.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen described the drone incidents in Denmark as the most severe attack on Danish critical infrastructure to date.
