A massive 13-foot great white shark, weighing about 100 stone, was sighted unexpectedly near a popular beach off the coast of Florida, surprising scientists with its behavior. The shark, named Breton, weighing 1,400 pounds, has been deviating from the usual migration pattern of other sharks, moving south while others head north for cooler waters and more food. Typically, great whites migrate from the Gulf of Mexico through Florida towards Canada, but Breton’s movements have been distinct from the norm.
On July 25, the apex predator was observed heading south near Daytona Beach, diverging from the expected route. OCEARCH, monitoring the shark’s tracker, detected a ping signal when Breton’s dorsal fins surfaced above the water, indicating his location. John Tyminki, a data scientist at OCEARCH, explained that seasonal food availability and water temperatures influence shark migration patterns in the summer.
Breton, tagged in September 2015, has traveled over 52,000 miles, showing diverse movement patterns both inshore and offshore. Despite the usual whereabouts of great white sharks in Canada or Cape Cod due to seal populations and water temperatures, Breton has ventured to warmer waters off the East coast of Florida, where temperatures are around 80 degrees Fahrenheit, uncommon for white sharks.
Scientists are puzzled by Breton’s unconventional behavior, speculating that he may be following seasonal fish schools deeper in colder waters. In another incident on July 25, a large shark, likely a great white, was spotted circling a boat near Portugal’s Nazaré, known for its surfing spots. A video capturing the moment was shared by a boat-tour company, showcasing the encounter with the massive predator.
