Spanish authorities have apprehended two UK nationals in connection with a brutal attempted murder that resulted in a British man being paralyzed from the neck down. The suspected shooter was taken into custody at Alicante airport while attempting to board a flight to Edinburgh. Simultaneously, a woman was detained upon her arrival in Spain at the same airport.
Both individuals have been linked to a violent criminal group believed to have originated in the UK. The victim, a 27-year-old man, sustained life-altering injuries after being shot outside his residence in Santiago de la Ribera near La Manga golf resort, in the presence of his girlfriend.
Following the incident, police officers on the scene managed to save his life by using improvised means to stop the bleeding and prevent further harm. Although initial reports suggested that the victim was left tetraplegic by a masked assailant who fled with an accomplice in a vehicle, this information has not been officially confirmed.
Subsequently, a vehicle matching the description of the one involved in the attack was discovered abandoned and set ablaze in a tunnel on the nearby AP-7 motorway, containing a silenced pistol and other incriminating evidence. The arrests were made public by the Civil Guard after an extensive investigation into the shooting, which occurred on November 18, 2024.
Detectives recovered the weapon used, as well as ammunition, a balaclava, and gloves from the burnt-out vehicle. The UK authorities cooperated with the Civil Guard throughout the investigation. The suspects were detained in April and May, with the information only recently disclosed by Spanish officials.
The operation, codenamed Operation Esbroya 24, indicated that the arrested individuals were part of a violent criminal organization from the UK that specifically traveled to the Murcian coast to target and harm the victim, identified only as Aaron. He was rushed to a hospital in Murcia and spent an extended period receiving medical care after the attack.
Witnesses initially mistook the gunfire for children’s firecrackers before emergency services arrived on the scene. The victim was initially thought to be Ukrainian before it was confirmed that he was a British national. Reports suggested he had relocated from Torrevieja due to issues with a criminal group.
Local sources indicated that the incident may have been a result of a personal conflict, with speculations about a vendetta against the victim. The injured man’s move to Santiago de la Ribera was seen as an attempt to evade threats from an underworld organization.
