The family and friends of a UK man who passed away during his trip in the Philippines are honoring the “kind-hearted individual” as they endeavor to repatriate him.
Stephen Harper, aged 35 from Bellshill in Scotland, died in Manila, the capital of the Philippines, on June 19 while traveling. His loved ones are now working to bring his remains back to the UK, with the expenses for repatriation estimated at £20,000.
Charles Brown, Stephen’s lifelong friend, initiated a fundraising campaign to assist in repatriating his friend, garnering considerable support. Charles expressed, “On June 19, 2026, we were informed of the heartbreaking news that my lifelong friend Stephen tragically lost his life while traveling in the Philippines.”
“I aim to raise funds on behalf of Stephen’s family to facilitate his return to the UK for a fitting farewell. The expected expenses for this endeavor can reach up to £20,000, so any contributions, regardless of size, will contribute to this cause and will be deeply appreciated by all.”
He continued, “Stephen was a remarkable friend with a genuinely compassionate nature. A devoted fan of Celtic F.C., he rarely missed a game, faithfully supporting the team both at home and away.”
“In addition to his love for football, he had a passion for exploring the world, creating lasting memories wherever he ventured. He will be warmly remembered and dearly missed by everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.”
Stephen’s mother, Tracy Harper, also shared a poignant tribute following her son’s passing. She expressed, “With heavy hearts, we announce the tragic news of our beloved son Stephen’s passing while traveling in the Philippines/Manila.”
“We are devastated by his departure and will forever cherish the memories we shared with him. We extend our gratitude to everyone for their support and compassion during this incredibly challenging period.”
Celtic supporters have also expressed deep sorrow over Stephen’s demise. A post by Celtic YNWA (You’ll Never Walk Alone – the club’s anthem) stated, “From the accounts of those who knew him, Stephen wasn’t just a Celtic fan… he embodied the spirit of the club.”
“He passionately followed the team, creating memories with his friends and being an integral part of the extensive Celtic community we often speak of. A compassionate individual, an explorer, a companion, and someone who held immense value to those around him.”
The post underscored the efforts to bring Stephen back to Scotland, emphasizing, “His family is now striving to reunite him with his homeland so he can receive the farewell he deserves… a gesture that any grieving family should be able to make after losing a loved one so far away.”
“Instances like these remind us of the true essence of support. We stand as a community, a family, and a comforting presence when someone is in need. Rest in peace Stephen. Our thoughts are with your family and friends.”
