Despite a slight cooling trend expected for the upcoming weekend, weather experts are indicating the likelihood of another heatwave next week based on current forecasting models.
According to the latest predictions from the Met Office, temperatures are projected to decrease to 28C in the southern regions and 24C in the northern areas by tomorrow. Peak temperatures on Sunday are forecasted to reach around 26C in the south and 24C in the north.
This anticipated drop in temperatures will mark the end of a 13-day stretch with temperatures consistently above 30C and also signal a potential departure from the heatwave threshold, bringing the UK’s third heatwave of 2026 to a close.
Officially, a heatwave is declared when temperatures exceed the defined threshold for three consecutive days, varying between 28C in the south-east to 25C in regions further away from the south-east.
Looking ahead, the GFS weather model hints at the possibility of a fourth heatwave in the near future. The data indicates potential temperature spikes up to 30C or 31C in western areas by next Friday, with temperatures reaching 29C as far north as Yorkshire.
Projections for the following Saturday show potential highs of 33C in southern England, with adjacent areas in Wales possibly reaching 29C or 30C. Meanwhile, the Midlands and East Anglia could experience temperatures as high as 32C.
Sunday of the same week is expected to bring even warmer conditions, with potential highs of 35C or 36C across southern and central England, extending from Gloucestershire to East Anglia, while Wales and northern England may see temperatures of 33C or 34C.
The subsequent Monday is also likely to be warm, with expected highs of 33C in eastern England and South Yorkshire, and a potential of reaching 31C in the north-west.
Temperature anomaly maps indicate that the UK, particularly England and Wales, are anticipated to experience temperatures significantly above the seasonal average during this period.
The GFS weather model suggests that 16 counties in England could witness temperatures exceeding 35C during the upcoming week.
The Met Office foresees a comparatively cooler day tomorrow, with conditions described as “less hot” than the previous week, accompanied by bright or sunny spells and the possibility of isolated showers turning thundery as cloud cover moves southwards.
Sunday’s temperatures are expected to align closer to seasonal norms, with most regions remaining dry and fine, although some areas in the north could experience patchy rain. The Met Office predicts a return to above-average temperatures in the coming week.
