Starting July 8, a significant adjustment to a crucial security protocol will impact multiple airports in the UK, particularly benefiting primary school children aged eight and nine who meet certain height requirements. This change, announced by the UK Government in May, aims to facilitate the travel process for approximately 1.5 million more children by allowing them to utilize UK eGates alongside an accompanying adult.
The adjustment will reduce the age threshold for eGate eligibility, making the journey smoother for families returning from vacations with young children. By passing through eGates, which typically only takes a few minutes, families can expedite their airport experience. This change is expected to decrease wait times at passport control as more passengers, including children aged eight and nine who meet the height criteria, leverage eGates.
Before July 8, eGates were generally accessible to individuals aged 10 and above, with minors under 17 required to be accompanied by an adult. To use an eGate, passengers must possess a passport featuring a biometric symbol on the cover and meet specific criteria. Mike Tapp, the Minister for Migration and Citizenship, emphasized that expanding eGate access aims to enhance the travel experience for families, ensuring efficiency while maintaining border security.
Phil Douglas, the Border Force Director General, highlighted the importance of eGates in safeguarding the UK border. This expansion of eGate access for families will enable secure and efficient travel, freeing up border officers to focus on potential threats to the country. The Chief Executive of AirportsUK, Karen Dee, praised the initiative, stating that it will streamline the border process and reduce wait times for families, ultimately enhancing the overall airport experience.
The introduction of ePassport gates at UK airports in 2008 marked a significant development in border security and passenger facilitation. Initially limited to UK, EU, and Swiss citizens, eGates have since evolved to accommodate travelers from various countries, enhancing efficiency and security at UK airports.
