“U.S. Trade Envoy Warns Canada Against Retaliation”

The U.S. trade envoy under Donald Trump’s administration has emphasized that they are safeguarding domestic supply chains and will not tolerate any retaliatory actions from Canada in response to the latest tariff threats. U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer stated that the tariffs are not aimed solely at Canada but are part of a global strategy. Greer further mentioned that if any country retaliates against the U.S., they will take countermeasures.

Recent discussions between Canada and the U.S. have been described as “constructive” following Trump’s announcement of imposing a 50% tariff on numerous Canadian products starting from August 19. Greer has engaged in multiple meetings with Canada’s Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc to navigate the ongoing trade negotiations.

Industry insiders familiar with the trade talks have indicated that Canada views August 19 as a critical deadline, signaling that talks may cease if the tariffs are implemented. Greer emphasized prioritizing President Trump’s trade policies while expressing willingness to work with Canada if it aligns with the U.S.’s interests.

Trump’s latest tariff threats were prompted by concerns over provincial liquor bans, dairy quotas, and auto tariffs. Sources suggest that Canada is open to addressing these issues in the negotiations. However, Bloc Québécois Leader Yves-François Blanchet expressed skepticism about an imminent deal and urged the government to stand firm on dairy negotiations.

Greer highlighted the U.S.’s concerns regarding trade with Canada, specifically mentioning alcohol bans and retaliatory tariffs. Former Canadian ambassador to the U.S., Frank McKenna, countered these claims, stating that Canada is defending itself against unfair and illegal measures imposed by the U.S.

The trade negotiations between the U.S. and Canada are ongoing, with both sides aiming to find common ground on various trade issues.
