Donald Trump now has an international airport named after him, courtesy of supporters in a Republican stronghold near his well-known resort retreat. The US President’s personal Boeing 757 landed at Trump International Airport in Palm Beach, Florida, following the approval of a bill renaming it from Palm Beach International Airport. This change, which took effect on Thursday, was embraced by the President’s spokesperson, his son Eric.
However, the decision has faced criticism, particularly from members of the public who pointed out that the Trump-controlled Federal Aviation Administration departed from tradition by honoring the widely unpopular president. The renaming of the 89-year-old airport also led to confusion among aviation enthusiasts as its designation changed to DJT, a departure from the usual practice seen in other airport name changes.
Social media users questioned the necessity of altering the airport code, citing examples like Beijing, Reagan, New Orleans, and Kansas City airports whose codes remained unchanged despite name modifications. The move to rename the airport after Trump was met with disapproval by many who viewed it as a display of the president’s self-absorption.
The airport’s close proximity to Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort, about five miles away, played a role in the renaming process initiated by the Florida legislature, dominated by the Republican Party. Governor Ron DeSantis, a former rival of Trump’s who now leads Florida, signed the legislation into law prior to its official implementation on Thursday. Eric Trump celebrated the event by tweeting about the landing of Trump Force One at the newly renamed Palm Beach International Airport, now known as President Donald J. Trump International Airport (DJT).
Expressing pride in the name change, Eric Trump emphasized his father’s contributions to Florida and the nation, underscoring the significance of seeing “DJT” on his boarding pass. The renaming ceremony attracted mixed reactions, with critics questioning the cost and priorities of honoring Trump in this manner.
