In response to legal challenges, President Donald Trump has justified the implementation of new import taxes on the UK and several other countries. These tariffs replace previous duties that expired following a ruling by the US Supreme Court deeming them unlawful.
During a statement at the Oval Office, President Trump described the new levies as standard tariffs that align with established practices. The White House defended the tariffs by alleging that the targeted economies had not enforced bans on goods produced by slave labor.
The recent tariffs were put in place as a temporary 10% import levy, which affected Britain among others, expired. This levy was introduced after the Supreme Court invalidated Mr. Trump’s initial broad global tariffs, which he previously celebrated as “Liberation Day.”
President Trump expressed dissatisfaction with the Supreme Court’s decision and emphasized the use of various forms of tariffs. His comments came after a legal group, the Liberty Justice Centre, filed a case challenging the latest import taxes on behalf of two small businesses.
The Liberty Justice Centre aims to overturn the replacement tariffs, arguing that changing statutes does not alter the law’s boundaries. The group’s chairman, Sara Albrecht, highlighted the need for every administration to respect the limitations of tariff authorities.
The UK Government clarified that the recent announcement did not alter the 10% tariff rate facing UK businesses. The UK, being a significant exporter to the US, maintains strong commercial ties with the country despite the ongoing tariff issues.
Moreover, the US recently lifted import duties on Scotch whisky, a move announced by President Trump following the state visit by the King and Queen. This decision marks a positive development in trade relations between the two countries.
