U.S. President Donald Trump declared on social media his intention to execute what he termed as “the MOST CRUSHING ECONOMIC OPERATION EVER AGAINST ANY COUNTRY — Economic Warfare and Isolation on an unprecedented scale.” Trump, in a post on Truth Social, provided scarce specifics but cautioned of economic repercussions for any nation backing Tehran or extending support to Iran.
He emphasized the severe economic repercussions for any country allowing its financial institutions, businesses, airports, or government entities to aid Iran. Without naming any specific countries, Trump urged an immediate halt to activities such as oil smuggling, swap lines, cash transfers, exchange houses, ship registries, and front companies, stating, “It all needs to stop NOW. You know who you are.”
Amid a six-month-old war resulting in numerous casualties and involving countries across the Gulf, Iran’s disruption of shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz, crucial for global oil trade, has rattled global markets. Despite two failed ceasefire agreements between the U.S. and Iran aimed at restoring shipping flow through Hormuz, tensions persist.
Recent conflicting reports of U.S.-Iran talks emerged after the United Arab Emirates suspended all trade activities with Iran following reports of missile launches into the sea, which Iran dismissed as baseless. China’s significant reliance on Iranian oil poses a challenge for the U.S. in escalating economic warfare, considering China’s status as a major exporter, including vital rare-earth minerals crucial for the U.S.
Amid the escalating tensions, Iran’s supreme leader’s adviser expressed Iran’s openness to dialogue with the U.S., emphasizing that negotiations should not be mistaken for surrender. While Trump denied ongoing talks with Iran, his son-in-law and special envoy, Jared Kushner, indicated that discussions with Iran were active and possibly more robust than ever.
