Video footage captures the moment a large truck speeds towards a level crossing while the warning bell alerts – right before a train collides with it, causing the train to derail.
Despite the train’s horn warning, the truck continued forward, resulting in the train’s front crashing into the side of the cab, crushing it and sending debris flying near Chýnov in the Czech Republic at approximately 1:30 pm on Thursday.
The impact was so intense that one of the train’s carriages derailed, veering off the tracks as the train came to a stop. Eventually, the rail car settled diagonally across the tracks, tilted to one side with smoke emerging from beneath it.
Emergency responders rescued 25 individuals from the train, including 20 passengers.
Following the collision, the truck driver sustained severe injuries, while the train operator and two passengers suffered minor to moderate injuries, as per local officials.
The estimated damages from the incident include £172,000 for the train, £3,400 for the railway infrastructure, and approximately £34,000 for the truck.
Vojtěch Míra, the spokesperson for the South Bohemian Ambulance Service, stated, “The operations centre dispatched all available ambulance crews from Tábor, along with an air ambulance helicopter.
“The individual in the truck sustained severe injuries and was conscious during the airlift to České Budějovice hospital.
“Three individuals on the train endured injuries, all classified as minor to moderate. Paramedics transported them to the hospital.”
The accident investigation concluded later that day by 5 pm.
The derailed carriage was repositioned onto the tracks at 7:44 pm and subsequently removed from the site around 9 pm.
Normal rail services resumed after 11 pm.
