The procession culminated with crowds overflowing into Trafalgar Square, where attendees gathered to listen to speeches against the backdrop of artist Teresa Margolles’s sculpture featuring face casts of 726 trans, non-binary, and gender non-conforming individuals. Lewis G Burton, a founding member of London Trans+ Pride, highlighted the significance of concluding the rally in a prominent location like Trafalgar Square, emphasizing the community’s presence and ownership of the city.
In a statement, Burton affirmed the resilience of the marchers, emphasizing their determination to continue advocating for the safety, visibility, and freedom of every trans individual. Prior to the march, the mother of a transgender woman who tragically ended her life expressed concerns about the escalating challenges faced by the transgender community due to what she described as worsening conditions and barriers to gender-affirming care.
The mother, Caroline Litman, lamented the inadequacies in support and care for her daughter, Alice, who tragically took her life after a prolonged wait for gender-affirming treatment. Litman underscored the urgency of addressing anti-trans policies and called on political leaders to take decisive action to prevent further tragedies within the transgender community.
Addressing the controversy surrounding the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) guidelines on single-sex spaces, Litman and other advocates urged political figures, including Andy Burnham, to prioritize the well-being and rights of transgender individuals. They emphasized the life-saving impact of gender-affirming care, particularly for young trans individuals, and urged policymakers to reject discriminatory policies that hinder progress in supporting the LGBTQ+ community.
