A tragic incident unfolded at Mersea beach, Essex, where a mother and daughter lost their lives due to a forceful tide, as recounted by a family member. Shelina Rahman, a teacher aged 41, and her 15-year-old daughter Sameeha perished while attempting to rescue Sameeha’s seven-year-old cousin, Musa Rahman, from the water. Musa remains hospitalized fighting for survival, while their father, Shahin Ahmed, who was present at the time, described the events that occurred just moments before they were set to leave the beach.
The family was struck by a sudden strong tide that swept them off their feet, causing panic. This unfortunate incident occurred only 20 minutes before they planned to depart. Shahin Ahmed reflected on the pleasant day they had enjoyed up to that point.
Since May 24, around 40 individuals have drowned in open waters across the UK amid multiple heatwaves. This alarming trend has prompted calls for urgent action from the government, with initiatives like the Save Lives for Sam campaign gaining traction to address the rising number of water-related fatalities.
The tragedy at Mersea is believed to have been exacerbated by a particularly potent tide. Mersea Island’s isolated location poses unique challenges as access is heavily influenced by the changing tides, with the only road in and out of the island becoming submerged twice daily, trapping unsuspecting visitors for several hours.
During the incident, 12 family members, including Shahin Ahmed, were present at the beach. Ahmed rushed to aid his struggling relatives after being alerted while packing the car. Bystanders, including Craig Bowe, helped rescue the trio from the water. Bowe’s wife, Carly, joined efforts to resuscitate Shelina and Sameeha on the shore.
Dr. Mansur Rahman, Shelina’s husband and Sameeha’s father, expressed his profound grief following the tragic loss. In a tearful statement alongside family members, he acknowledged the outpouring of support from the community during this difficult time, emphasizing the significance of the love and prayers received.
