Two individuals, a man, and a woman were tragically found deceased at Fistral Beach in Cornwall. Emergency response teams, including police, coastguard, and ambulance services, were on-site since the previous night. The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) launched two lifeboats around 9:30 pm as confirmed by the RNLI.
Witnesses reported the presence of multiple emergency vehicles and a rescue helicopter at the scene, according to CornwallLive. Cornwall Police have notified the families of the deceased individuals.
HM Coastguard Padstow released a statement regarding the incident, mentioning their involvement in the search and rescue operation at South Fistral. Various units such as Newquay RNLI Lifeboats, Coastguard Rescue helicopter 924, Devon & Cornwall Police, South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust, and others were also present.
St Agnes Coastguard Search & Rescue Team was later called off while en route to the scene. The Coastguard expressed condolences and advised the public to call 999 in case of coastal emergencies.
This incident adds to the troubling statistics of drowning cases this summer, with about 40 reported fatalities. Heatwaves across Europe have contributed to a rise in drownings, including nearly 100 deaths in Germany alone. The RNLI has issued guidelines on safe drowning rescues.
