“Starmer Reaffirms UK Support for Ukraine Against Russia”

Keir Starmer expressed confidence in Ukraine’s ability to prevail over Russia in the ongoing conflict and emphasized the importance of unwavering support from Britain for Kyiv. During his recent visit to the war-torn nation, the Prime Minister affirmed his solidarity with President Volodymr Zelensky as they confront Vladimir Putin’s prolonged illegal aggression.

In an exclusive interview with The Mirror before stepping down, Starmer underscored Ukraine as a pivotal cause of our era and affirmed the UK’s steadfast commitment to backing the country under his successor, Andy Burnham. Reassuring President Zelensky of Britain’s continuous support, Starmer highlighted the shared values of democracy and freedom that unite both nations in the fight against oppression.

Starmer’s visit aimed to allay any concerns in Kyiv regarding the leadership transition in the UK, a key ally of Ukraine. He reiterated the enduring support for Ukraine under Burnham’s leadership, emphasizing the shared values and the UK’s unwavering stance in standing by Ukraine throughout the conflict.

When questioned about Ukraine’s prospects in the war, Starmer noted the significant progress made by Ukrainian forces despite initial predictions of a swift Russian victory. He highlighted the impact of sanctions, collaborative efforts on the shadow fleet, and Ukraine’s strengthening military capabilities, expressing confidence in their ability to ultimately achieve victory.

President Zelensky acknowledged apprehensions about leadership changes in the UK and France but affirmed the enduring bonds between nations. Emphasizing the importance of preserving strong international relations amid the ongoing conflict, Zelensky expressed hope for continued collaboration with the UK under the incoming Prime Minister, Andy Burnham.

During a cordial meeting in Kyiv, President Zelensky honored Starmer with Ukraine’s “Order of Freedom,” recognizing his support for the country. The leaders paid tribute to fallen Ukrainian soldiers before engaging in discussions, and Starmer announced a €300 million aid package to bolster Ukraine’s defense capabilities, including the provision of advanced fighter jets to safeguard its airspace.

This strategic initiative will enable Ukraine to deploy a squadron of 16 Gripen E fighter jets by 2029, enhancing its combat capabilities in air-to-air engagements, ground strikes, and reconnaissance missions. The commitment to bolstering Ukraine’s military strength underscores the ongoing support and solidarity between the two nations.
