Speeding Driver Causes Fatal Crash, Receives 7-Year Sentence

A tragic incident occurred in Staffordshire when David Barker, 27, caused a fatal crash while driving at 76mph in a residential area, resulting in the death of his friend, Steven Field, 40. The crash occurred on Wolstanton High Street after Barker lost control of his Skoda Octavia. Field was thrown from the car and sustained fatal injuries. Barker fled the scene but later turned himself in, leading to his sentencing to seven years and four months in jail.

The events unfolded on the early hours of June 15, following a night out with friends at pubs. Barker’s reckless driving was evident as he exceeded the speed limit, eventually causing the fatal crash. Despite his remorse and acknowledgment of responsibility, Barker’s actions led to the tragic loss of his friend. The court noted that Barker’s excessive speed and reckless driving were the primary causes of the accident.

Acknowledging the gravity of the situation, Judge Graeme Smith described the incident as a ‘tragedy’ and emphasized the importance of driving responsibly. Barker pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving and was sentenced to serve two-thirds of his jail term with the remainder on license. Additionally, he was disqualified from driving for almost a decade and will need to pass an extended retest before regaining his driving privileges.
