Southport observed a moment of silence today to mark the second anniversary of a tragic incident that resulted in the loss of three young lives. The community gathered at the town hall gardens for a three-minute silence in memory of the victims who lost their lives on July 29, 2024, during a dance class themed after Taylor Swift.
Apart from the three children who lost their lives—Alice da Silva Aguiar, Bebe King, and Elsie Dot Stancombe—eight other children, dance instructor Leanne Lucas, and businessman John Hayes also suffered physical injuries during the attack. The public, Sefton Council, and Merseyside Police all participated in honoring the victims and survivors during the solemn moment of silence.
In a statement shared on social media with a pink background, Merseyside Police reflected on the positive impact that Alice, Bebe, and Elsie had on the world. The police expressed their commitment to never forgetting the events of that day and the profound effects it had on those directly impacted.
Rather than leaving floral tributes, the community was encouraged to contribute to local causes in remembrance of the victims. Following the tragic deaths, foundations were established in memory of Alice, Bebe, and Elsie to continue their legacies and support young individuals in various ways.
Sefton Council recently addressed the community, providing designated spaces for residents to mourn, reflect, and find solace in various ways. The council emphasized that there is no right or wrong approach to grieving and encouraged everyone to choose a method that feels most appropriate to them.
An earlier public inquiry highlighted that the tragic attack could have been prevented if appropriate actions had been taken by authorities and the assailant’s parents.
