“Son of a Critch” Wraps Up with Season 5 Finale

Mark Critch is gearing up for the conclusion of “Son of a Critch,” assuring fans that the finale will be worth the wait. The popular CBC comedy series, inspired by Critch’s bestselling memoir, is set to return for its fifth and final season on September 8, taking viewers on one last journey to Newfoundland.

Critch, who portrays his own father in the show, expressed his satisfaction with the ending, calling the last episode a standout moment in the entire series. While the show is rooted in his past experiences, he highlighted the new memories created with the cast and crew during the production.

In the upcoming season, the narrative intertwines Mark’s final year of high school with the Newfoundland cod moratorium, leading to a tumultuous period as he navigates first love, evolving friendships, and family challenges while pursuing his acting aspirations.

Young actor Benjamin Evan Ainsworth, known for his role as the young Critch, reflected on the significant journey of portraying the character for nearly a third of his life. Ainsworth, who also appeared in HBO’s “House of the Dragon,” shared his excitement for future projects, including starring as Link in the live-action “The Legend of Zelda” film.

As the cast bids farewell to the show, actress Claire Rankin, who plays Mary, expressed a sense of closure akin to outgrowing a cherished summer camp. She emphasized the enduring friendships and memories forged during the show’s run, with personal connections deepening as she learned more about the real-life inspiration for her character.

Screen veteran Malcolm McDowell, known for his iconic roles in films like “A Clockwork Orange” and “Star Trek: Generations,” praised his experience portraying Critch’s grandfather as one of his fondest memories in his career. McDowell commended Critch’s writing prowess, placing him among the best writers he has collaborated with.

The fifth and final season of “Son of a Critch” is scheduled to premiere on September 8 on CBC and CBC Gem, marking the culmination of the beloved series.
