“Reform UK Candidate Sparks Controversy with Pro-Crimea Annexation Comments”

Reform UK’s representative running in the Makerfield by-election has made comments suggesting that Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014 was justified. Robert Kenyon, the candidate, supported a social media post describing the annexation as a demonstration of democracy. These remarks have stirred controversy alongside other contentious statements made by Kenyon, who is challenging Labour’s Andy Burnham in the Greater Manchester constituency.

During an online discussion in March 2014, Kenyon endorsed the idea that Crimea’s desire to join Russia was a democratic choice, comparing it to past actions like the Falklands situation. Following the annexation, over 100,000 Ukrainians fled Crimea as the Russian government cracked down on dissenters.

Additionally, Kenyon has faced criticism for his derogatory remarks about women, including offensive comments about Carol Vorderman. Responding to Vorderman’s demand for an apology, Kenyon acknowledged the inappropriate nature of his past comments. He has also been associated with disparaging comments about women and expressing skepticism towards political figures like Nigel Farage and Donald Trump, as well as admitting to not supporting Brexit.

In response to Kenyon’s views, Defence Minister Luke Pollard accused him of echoing Kremlin propaganda and being out of touch with the British public on issues related to Russia and Ukraine. Furthermore, a group of MPs has called for an investigation into Reform UK over allegations of Islamophobia, with concerns raised about the party’s compliance with the Equality Act of 2010.

A spokesperson for Reform UK clarified that Kenyon’s comments were made before his political involvement and emphasized his opposition to Russia’s actions in Ukraine. The party expressed full support for Kenyon as a candidate, highlighting his potential as a future Member of Parliament for Makerfield.
