Investigations are currently ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding a passenger jet’s departure as US President Donald Trump’s helicopter was approaching Marine Forces One near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport on Tuesday, August 4. This incident appears to be a breach of safety protocols implemented following a mid-air collision near the airport last year.
The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration have launched inquiries into the situation when the jet took off as the helicopter carrying the president left the White House. The FAA’s decision to suspend take-offs and landings at the airport whenever a conflicting helicopter is present was made after a tragic incident on January 29, 2025, where 67 individuals lost their lives in a collision involving an airliner and an Army Black Hawk helicopter.
The airspace in the vicinity of the White House and Reagan Airport experiences heavy congestion due to military and commercial aircraft movements. Despite the airplane’s ascent above Marine One as the helicopter approached, there was no risk of a collision as the two aircraft were not on a collision course.
According to the FAA, an initial investigation revealed a brief loss of separation between the aircraft, but they subsequently moved away from each other. The air traffic controller remained in communication with both the commercial pilot and the Marine One pilot during this separation issue.
The White House assured that President Trump was never in jeopardy during the incident, emphasizing the high level of skill possessed by Marine One pilots. The Marine Corps stood by the actions of their helicopter pilots, highlighting past challenges related to communication between military and civilian air traffic controllers at Reagan Airport.
