“Probe Exposes Fish Meal Factory’s Illicit Disposal Practices”

A team of government investigators in Goa, India, conducted an inquiry into United Marine Products, a factory accused of improper disposal of toxic wastewater. Local residents had raised concerns about the factory’s activities affecting air quality and water safety. The factory produces fish meal, a protein powder for farmed fish, by processing wild-caught fish. The investigators found that the plant was illegally disposing of wastewater by drilling bore holes behind the facility, contaminating groundwater and causing health issues for villagers and livestock.

Despite the accusations, the plant owner denied any wrongdoing. The factory in India supplied Skretting, a major feed producer used by Canadian fish farms. The Outlaw Ocean Project uncovered various hidden costs associated with producing such feed, including job losses, chemical exposure, worker fatalities, and protests due to factory odors.

These impacts mainly affect poorer countries where the feed ingredients are sourced, contrasting with the consumption of premium seafood in wealthier nations. The investigation highlighted the environmental and social repercussions of the fish meal industry globally, shedding light on issues such as overfishing and pollution.

Aquaculture’s reliance on fish meal has been decreasing, with efforts to incorporate alternative ingredients like insects and algae. However, the demand for fish meal remains high, leading to sustainability challenges. The Outlaw Ocean Project’s investigation revealed issues with fish meal processing plants in Canada, emphasizing the need for responsible sourcing and production practices in the seafood industry.

Skretting, a significant player in the aquaculture feed sector, has initiated an investigation in response to the findings. The story underscores the interconnectedness of the global seafood supply chain and the importance of sustainable practices in mitigating environmental and social impacts across borders.
