Princess Kate paid a surprise visit to Evelina London Children’s Hospital, where she interacted with children undergoing cancer treatment, spreading joy and smiles. As the hospital’s patron since 2018, the Princess of Wales spent time understanding the hospital’s innovative approach that combines specialized medical care with family support to assist children and their families during difficult times.
Greeted by Gubby Ayida, the hospital’s chief executive, Princess Kate embarked on a tour, meeting patients and families who have benefited from the hospital’s recent enhancements. Dressed in an elegant white dress with a black belt, her first stop was the Edward ward, a modern children’s cardiac unit within St Thomas’ Hospital, designed by top pediatric heart specialists.
During her visit, Princess Kate charmed both children and parents, even amusing a young boy who mistook her for the Queen. She engaged with patients, like Ejran, a 10-year-old with serious cardiac issues, who found the encounter “amazing.” Kate shared a moment with him and other children, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere in the Edward Ward.
Her visit extended to meeting Hope Turnbull, 14, and her mother, Connie, who were dealing with heart health challenges. Kate also toured the Galaxy Ward, an advanced outpatients unit, where children receive specialized care, including heart clinic appointments and diagnostic tests.
Concluding her visit, Princess Kate met the children’s cancer program team in the hospital’s atrium, discussing plans for a new specialist cancer and transplant service. She expressed admiration for the hospital’s progress over the years and its upcoming expansion, including a new building slated for the early 2030s, to cater to the growing demand for services.
The hospital is collaborating with cancer specialists from The Royal Marsden and St George’s Hospital to consolidate cancer and transplant services into the future Children’s Cancer Principal Treatment Centre at Evelina, ensuring comprehensive care for children with cancer in one centralized location.
As the patron of Evelina for eight years, Princess Kate has been actively involved in supporting the hospital’s initiatives. Her recent visit not only showcased her dedication but also highlighted the hospital’s commitment to providing world-class care for children in need.
