“Predator Sentenced: Attempted Rape Near Buckingham Palace”

A man labeled as a “predator” has been sentenced to over seven years in prison for attempting to rape a woman near Buckingham Palace. The incident occurred in the early hours of September 7, 2024, when the man, identified as Ramzi Barkat, followed the woman out of St James’s Park in central London. Despite the victim’s refusal of his advances, Barkat proceeded to physically assault her. Fortunately, the assault was interrupted by three courageous soldiers who heard the woman’s cries for help.

During the sentencing at Southwark Crown Court, Judge Justin Cole condemned Barkat’s actions, stating that he had targeted a vulnerable woman and behaved like a predator. However, the judge also criticized the police for their mishandling of the case. He highlighted that Barkat had been released either on bail or under investigation following the incident, despite clear evidence of his dangerous behavior.

Judge Cole expressed dismay at the police’s “catalogue of incompetencies,” emphasizing that Barkat should not have been set free considering the threat he posed to the public. Barkat, an Algerian-born individual residing in London, was convicted of attempted rape and assaulting one of the soldiers who intervened. Despite his denial of the charges, Barkat was issued a 10-year sexual harm prevention order and a 10-year restraining order.

In recognition of their bravery, the judge announced his intention to nominate the young soldiers for High Sheriff Bravery Awards.
