“Post-Storm Increase: Snowshoe Hares Thrive on Prince Edward Island”

Snowshoe hares have become more prevalent on Prince Edward Island following post-tropical storm Fiona, according to a wildlife biologist in the province. Garry Gregory from P.E.I.’s fish and wildlife division mentioned an increase in sightings of what people often mistake for rabbits in their yards. However, these animals are actually snowshoe hares, as rabbits are not indigenous to the area. While there is no official data tracking the rise in the snowshoe hare population, Gregory believes that the changes in the landscape post-Fiona have likely contributed to their increased presence.

The aftermath of the storm left dense debris in forests and woodlots across P.E.I., creating ideal escape cover for hares with brush piles, fallen trees, and thick patches of deadfall. This cover has facilitated the survival of more hares, potentially leading to a population surge. As the debris breaks down and coniferous trees shed their needles over time, the advantages gained by hares from the storm will gradually diminish.

The storm also allowed sunlight to penetrate the forest canopy, promoting the growth of early successional plants that serve as essential winter food for snowshoe hares. These plants include willows, grey birch, maples, and pin cherry, providing abundant forage for hares during the colder months. The new habitat benefits various wildlife species like songbirds and other animals that rely on early successional growth for survival.

Despite the increase in hares, Gregory mentioned that it does not necessarily translate to a rise in predator numbers on P.E.I. Unlike in northern regions where predator populations closely follow snowshoe hare cycles, predators on the island are more generalized in their diet.

For Islanders encountering hares in their yards, Gregory advised against feeding them, as hares primarily feed on grass and herbaceous plants in summer and are usually cautious around human interaction. Feeding hares could attract them closer to dogs, posing a risk to the hares. Additionally, Gregory addressed reports of hares with ticks, stating that while it may be more visible due to increased public awareness and phone cameras, the tick species found on hares are not the primary concern for Lyme disease. Tick infestations on hares typically have minimal impact on their health unless severe.
