Nigel Farage is under scrutiny by Parliament’s standards watchdog for allegedly neglecting to disclose financial benefits he obtained from a convicted criminal offering to launder drug money.
The leader of Reform UK is facing accusations of violating parliamentary regulations by accepting various forms of support, including staffing, security, and housing from George Cottrell in the year leading up to his tenure as an MP.
Cottrell, also known as “Posh George,” is now the subject of an ethics inquiry concerning the alleged financial assistance he provided. Reform UK has refuted any claims of its leader breaching the code of conduct.
Having served time in a US federal prison, Cottrell, known as inmate 46832-424, received a sentence for wire fraud. He admitted to engaging in activities related to money laundering and illicit financial transactions, including offering services to move criminal proceeds through the dark web.
Despite his admission of facilitating money laundering, Cottrell maintained that he and his accomplice had intentions to keep the illicit funds rather than carry out the promised laundering services.
Following his arrest during a sting operation in Las Vegas, Cottrell’s association with Farage has come under renewed scrutiny. Allegations have surfaced regarding financial support provided by Cottrell for staff working on Farage’s social media campaigns and the use of a townhouse near Buckingham Palace.
Questions have been raised regarding Farage’s declaration of gifts and support received, particularly concerning the reported financial aid from Cottrell. Calls for further investigation into Farage’s financial dealings have been made by MPs from various political parties.
