A woman fell seriously ill with a parasite after swimming in contaminated seawater during a heatwave. Katherine Hopkins, a former tattoo artist, spent time in the sea at Hove Lawns in Brighton and Lancing Beach in West Sussex. She developed stomach cramps and other severe symptoms after her beach visits and was later diagnosed with cryptosporidium, a microscopic parasite causing intestinal illness.
Katherine, who had a kidney transplant, believes she ingested the parasite by splashing contaminated seawater on her face. This incident raised concerns about water quality and the risk of infection from polluted seawater. Southern Water faced a £7.1 million fine for illegal sewage pollution incidents, highlighting the importance of maintaining water cleanliness.
Despite the area’s improved water quality ratings, Katherine remains cautious and vows never to swim in British waters again.
