A police officer is set to face court charges for causing death by dangerous driving, nearly 10 months after a fatal accident involving a 16-year-old e-bike rider.
The incident, which occurred at 10:10 am on Sunday, September 28, 2025, on Chilwell Lane in Bramcote, Nottinghamshire, involved two cars and an e-bike, resulting in the death of Ryley Hutson. The teenager was pronounced dead at the scene, with emergency services responding and an air ambulance landing nearby.
The officer involved, Daniel Cartwright, 31, was off duty at the time of the crash. Nottinghamshire Police announced that Cartwright, a serving officer with Bedfordshire Police, has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving. He is scheduled to appear before magistrates in Nottingham on August 6, 2026.
Following the tragic incident, an online fundraiser on GoFundMe was created by Ryley’s aunt, describing him as a vibrant individual full of life, laughter, and love. She expressed the family’s devastation over his loss in the motorcycle accident.
Initially, a 30-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and released on police bail pending further investigations. Detective Inspector Jamie Moore of Nottinghamshire Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit highlighted the tragic impact on Ryley’s family and provided updates on the investigation progress.
An inquest into Ryley’s death was initiated by Coroner Amanda Bewley at Nottingham Coroner’s Court, revealing chest injuries as a preliminary cause of death during a post-mortem examination.
