The driveway of a luxurious Malibu coastal estate, reportedly owned by Nicolas Cage, experienced a collapse on Tuesday morning due to a massive sinkhole emerging in front of the residence. The incident led to a gas leak around 6 a.m., prompting swift responses from authorities and utility services. SoCalGas, the utility company, managed to control the leak after a few hours but decided to temporarily halt natural gas services in a section of the street as a preventative measure against coastal erosion.
The sinkhole, measuring approximately 7.5 to nine meters deep and 18 meters wide, extends into the roadway, as confirmed by local authorities. In response to the situation, a local emergency was declared, and an evacuation order was issued for 31 properties in the vicinity.
Although requests for comment from Cage’s representatives went unanswered, property records indicate that the estate was sold in 2024, with the prior owner disclosing Cage as the buyer during the sale.
The mansion sustained damage during a coastal flooding advisory in the Los Angeles area, stemming from the remnants of Hurricane Marie, which had transitioned into a tropical storm. While the storm did not directly hit land, it brought heavy rainfall and created hazardous waves along the Southern California coast during the recent holiday weekend.
The City of Malibu released a statement attributing the sinkhole incident to broader regional coastal conditions, highlighting ongoing monitoring efforts in various vulnerable coastal areas.
Situated between the ocean and the renowned Pacific Coast Highway, the private neighborhood where the mansion is located faced the sinkhole ordeal. Cage, aged 62, has been actively involved in the entertainment industry, with recent appearances in the Amazon series “Spider-Noir” and an upcoming role as John Madden in a biographical film slated for release later this year. His illustrious career spans over 100 films, including an Oscar-winning performance in “Leaving Las Vegas.”
