“New Alliance to Support Youth in AI Job Market”

A new initiative called the Early Careers Jobs Alliance is being launched to provide additional support for young individuals entering the workforce. This partnership involves collaboration between the government, industry, trade unions, and young people to examine the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on entry-level positions. The alliance, co-chaired by Prospect’s General Secretary Mike Clancy and the government’s AI Champion for the Digital and Technologies sector, Katie Gallagher OBE, aims to analyze the evolving nature of entry-level work and offer practical guidance to businesses on restructuring roles while ensuring opportunities for young individuals.

With a funding of £20 million, the program will be unveiled during the Technology Secretary’s address at the world’s inaugural AI Adoption Summit. One of the key components is the introduction of an AI bootcamp initiative across England, designed to provide a pathway to employment for at-risk youth who are not engaged in education or training, potentially preventing them from unemployment. Recent data indicates that more than a million individuals aged 16-24 in the UK are currently not in education, employment, or training.

Liz Kendall, the Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology, emphasized the importance of fostering a future where AI complements businesses and workers, ensuring that individuals are supported during the job transition process rather than being left to navigate it independently. She stated that the evolving work landscape, driven by technological advancements, necessitates a focus on equipping young people with the necessary skills and opportunities for meaningful employment.

Pat McFadden, the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, highlighted the significance of providing young individuals with the tools and skills required to succeed in a changing economic environment influenced by technological progress. Through initiatives like the Youth Guarantee, efforts are being made to ensure that every young person has access to learning and earning opportunities. By empowering youth with tech and AI competencies, the aim is to broaden access to the opportunities arising from the technological revolution.
