An individual has succumbed to measles, as confirmed by health authorities, amidst a surge in cases across the United Kingdom.
The fatality was an adult with an underlying immunological condition, falling victim to the disease. This tragic event follows the loss of two children in England to measles in June.
Recent data from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) reveals 883 confirmed measles cases in England since the beginning of the year up to July 6. All regions in England have reported cases, with London accounting for over half (52%), followed by the West Midlands with 17% and the North West with 10%. The majority of cases occurred in children aged 10 and below, according to the UKHSA.
In response to the escalating situation, NHS leaders have initiated a catch-up campaign targeting parents of children aged two to 11 who missed the MMR vaccine, which safeguards against measles, mumps, and rubella. The MMR/V vaccine, additionally providing protection against chickenpox, is now available.
Health officials aim to reach out to approximately one million families of children who missed one or both doses of the vaccine. Current data shows that 84.1% of five-year-olds have received both MMR vaccine doses.
General practitioners will communicate with parents of children under six years old, while those with children aged six to 11 will be contacted through the NHS app, text, email, or letter.
The World Health Organization declared earlier this year that the UK no longer met the criteria for measles elimination due to declining vaccination rates and a surge in cases.
Measles is highly contagious, transmitted through air or water droplets from infected individuals. Apart from the risk of death, it can lead to severe complications like blindness, deafness, and neurological issues. Infected individuals are contagious from the onset of symptoms until four days after the rash appears.
Concerns have been raised about low vaccination rates, suggesting unvaccinated children might be excluded from school during outbreaks.
The World Health Organization highlighted that measles, previously eliminated in the UK between 2021-2023, resurfaced in 2024 due to vaccine coverage dropping below the 95% threshold required for herd immunity.
Typical symptoms of measles start with cold-like signs, followed by a rash a few days later. Some individuals may also develop small spots in their mouth.
The initial stages of measles involve cold-like symptoms, followed by the appearance of small white spots inside the cheeks and on the back of the lips a few days later. Subsequently, a rash emerges on the face and behind the ears before spreading to the rest of the body.
