“Major Earthquake Halts Government Operations in Alabel”

Government operations in Alabel have been halted following a significant earthquake that struck the Philippines earlier today. The earthquake, with an initial magnitude of 8.2, was felt in Davao City around 7.40 am local time on Monday, June 8, 2026. However, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre later revised the magnitude to 7.8.

Concerns about a potential tsunami have arisen in various countries, including the Philippines, Indonesia, Japan, Palau, Yap, Taiwan, Papua New Guinea, and the west coast of the United States. While New Zealand and Australia initially expressed worries about a tsunami, they have since confirmed that the threat has subsided.

In response to the earthquake, the Local Government Unit of Alabel, under the guidance of Mayor Lilibeth “Ybing” J. Salarda, MPA, has suspended all classes and government activities until further notice. Residents are advised to prioritize safety, stay in open areas away from structures, and monitor official channels for updates. For emergency assistance, individuals in Alabel can contact the Alabel Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office at 0970-025-7156.

President Bongbong Marcos of the Philippines has not yet issued a statement regarding the incident. Stay informed with the latest developments by following our live blog.
