Justice Department Admits Fault in Lincoln Memorial Pool Renovation

The Justice Department has acknowledged that the refurbishment of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool by Donald Trump, costing millions of pounds, was rushed and poorly executed. This admission comes after weeks of claims by US President Trump and US Attorney Jeanine Pirro that vandals were responsible for the damage to the pool’s lining, algae growth, and discolored water.

Following a recent court filing, the Justice Department has abandoned a criminal case against former Olympian David Hearn, who was accused of intentionally damaging the pool. New evidence provided by the Interior Department indicates that the damage resulted from a faulty installation by a contractor and the rush to finish the project before the America 250 celebration in 2026.

A visual inspection revealed widespread damage in the pool, contradicting the theory of vandalism. Pirro’s filing stated that with this new information, it is challenging to attribute the damage to vandalism beyond a reasonable doubt and requested the case’s dismissal.

Hearn’s legal team criticized the case, insisting that it was unfounded and called for an apology from the government. Trump initiated a $14 million renovation of the pool, aiming to have it ready for the country’s 250th anniversary festivities. However, as issues arose during the project, Trump alleged vandalism without proof.

Hearn, who pleaded not guilty to property destruction charges, faced a trial scheduled to commence on September 28. Prosecutors admitted that they had relied on misleading information initially provided by the Interior Department, which pointed to vandalism as the cause of the damage.

The case against Hearn has faced challenges, with his lawyers highlighting irregularities in the process. Testimonies revealed pre-existing damage to the pool, undermining the prosecution’s claims. Hearn, a former Olympian, denied wrongdoing and criticized the government’s handling of the situation.

In summary, the Justice Department’s acknowledgment of the flawed renovation project at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool sheds light on the complexities surrounding the case against David Hearn and the challenges faced in determining the actual cause of the pool’s damage.
