A significant joint rescue mission in the English Channel was launched today to save 157 migrants whose dinghy overturned after its engine caught fire. French vessels, British Border Security Command boats, and an RNLI lifeboat were mobilized to the Channel early this morning after the incident occurred around 6 am. The migrants were rescued and transported to Boulogne-sur-Mer, near Calais, with British vessels assisting in the safe transfer of 54 individuals.
The dinghy caught fire while passing through a French search and rescue region, according to the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, marking one of the largest attempted Channel crossings. The French Maritime Prefecture reported being alerted to the vessel departing from the Veules-les-Roses area early in the morning. French Sea Rescue Society and two vessels, the Argonaute and the Minck, monitored the boat’s journey.
Initially, five individuals were rescued by French authorities while the boat was in French territory. The rest of the group continued their voyage until the engine fire forced them to seek urgent assistance as the boat rapidly deteriorated. The migrants onboard, determined to reach the United Kingdom, declined initial French aid and only accepted help in dire situations.
Responding to the emergency, the Border Security Command ship BSC Contender assisted in the operation alongside French forces. A UK Government spokesperson confirmed the involvement of British vessels in supporting the French search and rescue efforts, emphasizing the dangers of small boat crossings and the ongoing collaboration with France to prevent such perilous journeys.
The incident highlighted the hazardous nature of migrant Channel crossings, with government officials stressing the risks associated with human traffickers’ disregard for life. Pictures from the French side showed migrants disembarking from the vessel, clad in red MediFleece’s and being led to safety upon arrival at the Port de Commerce in Boulogne-sur-Mer.
The joint operation reflects increased UK-France cooperation in responding to Channel crossings, following a substantial financial agreement aimed at deterring illegal entries into the UK. The partnership includes plans for enhanced security measures such as deploying riot-trained police on French beaches and utilizing advanced technology to combat people smuggling. The Home Office reported a 43 percent decrease in crossings compared to the previous year, indicating progress in addressing the issue.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham praised the enforcement efforts against people-smuggling gangs and stressed the importance of establishing safe routes for migrants as part of a comprehensive solution. The ongoing cooperation between the UK and France aims to address the challenges posed by irregular Channel crossings and ensure the safety of those attempting the journey.
