A woman who was controlling and jealous subjected her partner to psychological and physical abuse, which tragically led to the partner taking her own life shortly after seeking help from the police.
Kathryn White and Claire Alex initially met on the dating app Tinder in August 2021. However, their relationship turned tumultuous, culminating in a violent incident in July 2022. During an argument, White physically assaulted Ms. Alex by grabbing her neck, threatening suicide, confiscating her phone, and forcefully pushing her to the ground.
After enduring nearly a year of torment, Claire found the strength to report the abuse to the authorities, expressing her shattered state of mind. Tragically, just four days later, she ended her own life.
White, aged 41 and residing in Mayfield Mews, Crewe, denied the charges of controlling and coercive behavior. Nevertheless, she was found guilty after a trial and faced sentencing on Friday, July 31.
The judge presiding over the case characterized White’s actions as a prolonged and relentless pattern of psychological and physical abuse. Testimony revealed instances where White threatened violence, including one incident where she threatened to stab Ms. Alex. Additionally, she physically assaulted her outside her workplace for innocently receiving a hug from a colleague.
In her defense, Rosemary Proctor highlighted White’s struggles with mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, and ADHD, as well as past experiences of sexual trauma. However, the prosecution, represented by Ember Jade Wong, emphasized how White controlled every aspect of Ms. Alex’s life, isolating her from friends and family.
The judge, in handing down the sentence, criticized White for her lack of remorse and empathy throughout the trial. He noted her attempts to manipulate evidence and her inappropriate behavior in court, indicating a complete disregard for the impact of her actions.
Ultimately, White was sentenced to three years and six months in prison for her role in the tragic events.
