“GPS Alert Preceded Husband’s Tragic Death”

A woman shared her heartbreaking experience of receiving a notification from her late husband’s GPS tracker alerting her about an accident just an hour before the police arrived to inform her of his death.

Paula Overton, 32, received an automated text message from her husband Ben’s Garmin watch while he was cycling home from work. Little did she know that shortly after, she would learn of his tragic passing in a fatal collision with a car on a country road in Crawley, Sussex, in February 2022.

Recalling the day of Ben’s demise, Paula expressed her intuition that something was amiss even before the authorities notified her. Following the driver’s admission of partial responsibility for the incident, Paula shared memories of the normal day Ben had kissed her goodbye and mentioned planning a vacation together.

Recounting the moment she received the distressing alert from the GPS tracker, Paula described her shock as the tracking app showed Ben’s location stationary on the road. Fearing the worst, she contacted emergency services, anxiously awaiting confirmation of the accident’s details.

Despite the lack of updates from the police in the months following Ben’s death, Paula persisted in seeking justice. After a prolonged legal battle, the driver accepted partial liability, providing some closure for Paula.

Reflecting on the arduous journey seeking answers about her husband’s tragic end, Paula emphasized the importance of holding the responsible party accountable. Solicitors from Fletchers pursued compensation from the driver’s insurers, acknowledging the pain and uncertainty Paula endured over the years.

Victoria Martin of Fletchers Solicitors expressed hope that their efforts had brought some closure and justice to Paula, who had tirelessly sought clarity regarding the circumstances surrounding Ben’s untimely death.
