“Government Cracks Down on Vapes with Plain Packaging”

The government has announced a significant crackdown on vapes, proposing plain packaging and restricted sales. Health Secretary James Murray disclosed plans to regulate e-cigarettes like traditional cigarettes, aiming to conceal them in stores nationwide. The proposal also includes plain packaging for cigarette papers and cigars, along with the removal of tobacco product displays from duty-free zones and airports.

In an article for the Mirror, Mr. Murray outlined the initiative to address youth vaping through measures like plain packaging, simplified flavor names, and subdued device colors. He emphasized the need to limit access to these products, citing concerns over marketing tactics targeting vulnerable demographics.

Following the enactment of the Tobacco and Vapes Act earlier this year, the government now intends to utilize its authority to combat youth vaping. An estimated one million 11–17-year-olds in Great Britain had experimented with vaping in 2025, with attractive packaging and flavors luring them in.

A consultation has been launched to implement regulations on e-cigarette packaging, including restrictions on colors, branding, and product information. The emphasis is on recognizable descriptions for flavors and standardized packaging designs in neutral tones.

Mr. Murray highlighted the importance of preventing youth exposure to vaping, acknowledging the potential benefits for adult smokers seeking to quit. While recognizing the harm reduction aspect for smokers, he stressed the imperative of safeguarding young individuals from the influence of vaping products.

Professor Steve Turner from the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health expressed concerns about the marketing strategies employed by tobacco and vaping companies, advocating for stringent regulations to shield future generations from nicotine-related risks.
