“Fridge or Pantry? Household Food Storage Wars Heat Up”

In the ongoing debate over where to store common kitchen items like eggs, ketchup, and bread, many households find themselves at odds. A recent survey revealed that a majority of people have quarreled with family members about whether certain foods belong in the fridge or pantry, with disagreements arising about twice a month on average.

The uncertainty surrounding food storage is prevalent, as more than three quarters of individuals admit to not knowing the ideal storage location for various items to maintain freshness and flavor. While traditional practices inherited from parents still influence some, a growing number now turn to online resources for guidance on the matter.

A study conducted by biscuit manufacturer Bahlsen identified bananas, potatoes, avocados, bread, jam, and honey as common sources of confusion among Brits when it comes to storage. Food waste expert Kate Hall emphasizes the importance of proper storage, especially during warmer weather, noting that factors like temperature, humidity, and light exposure can significantly impact food quality.

Hall recommends refrigerating items like apples and potatoes to extend their shelf life. Opened jams and sauces should also be stored in the fridge to prevent mold growth. While some foods benefit from refrigeration, others such as tomatoes and chocolate may lose taste or texture when chilled.

Certain items like olive oil, honey, and coffee are best kept in cool, dark cupboards to maintain their quality. Bananas are suggested to ripen naturally at room temperature, while fruits like berries and cucumber thrive in the fridge. Understanding the optimal storage conditions for various foods can help reduce waste and preserve their taste and freshness.
