“Float to Live” Technique Saves Lives Amid Rising Drowning Crisis

Learning a basic floating technique can be a lifesaver when in the water this summer. The RNLI is emphasizing the importance of this method following a tragic incident where 26 individuals, mainly young people, lost their lives during recent heatwaves. The “Float to Live” approach, backed by science, has already rescued more than 50 individuals.

The method entails lying on your back in the water with your ears submerged and gently moving your arms and legs to stay afloat. The Mirror had the opportunity to experience this technique firsthand at the RNLI’s headquarters in Poole, Dorset, in their sea survival pool.

Ross Macleod, the RNLI’s water safety manager, highlighted the significance of relaxation in the water, emphasizing the need to tilt the head back with submerged ears and control breathing. He reassured that everyone floats differently, and practice in a supervised setting can help individuals understand their floating capabilities.

Sharing the “Float to Live” message is crucial, especially during this time of increased drownings. Parents are urged to have conversations with young people about water safety, as being informed can potentially save lives. The importance of spreading this message was underscored due to the looming heatwave declaration in the UK, with temperatures expected to reach 30C in some areas.

Reporter Saskia Rowlands, reflecting on her experience at RNLI’s headquarters, expressed a shift in perspective regarding water safety. She emphasized the unpredictable nature of open water and how the Float to Live technique is beneficial for everyone, not just non-swimmers. Encouraging others to try the technique, she highlighted its quick learning curve and life-saving potential.

The Mirror’s Save Lives for Sam campaign aims to address the rising drowning crisis in the UK. Supported by various groups and individuals, the campaign advocates for urgent actions such as water safety lessons in schools, a public awareness campaign, improved safety equipment at high-risk water bodies, the implementation of Sam’s Law, and the appointment of a dedicated Minister for Water Safety. The campaign, initiated in memory of Sam Haycock, seeks to prevent future tragedies through comprehensive safety measures and education.
