“Fans Flock to P.E.I. for ‘Road to Avonlea’ Convention”

In her childhood in Detroit, Patty Czajka was captivated by a Canadian TV series based on Prince Edward Island. Every Sunday, she watched “Road to Avonlea” with her grandmother, particularly admiring Mag Ruffman, who portrayed Aunt Olivia in the show during the 1990s.

When Czajka learned of Ruffman’s appearance at a fan convention in P.E.I. dedicated to the series, she didn’t hesitate to secure a ticket. “She was like my Disney princess while growing up,” Czajka shared at the convention, expressing her excitement about being in P.E.I.

Fans of “Road to Avonlea” traveled from various parts of the world to the Island for the fully booked convention. The acclaimed Canadian show, broadcast in over 100 countries, premiered in 1990 and concluded after seven seasons in 1996.

The storyline followed the journey of young Sarah Stanley (portrayed by future Academy Award winner Sarah Polley), who is sent to live with her late mother’s relatives at the dawn of the 20th century. Loosely inspired by Lucy Maud Montgomery’s novels, the series garnered a global following.

The convention spanned three days and featured oyster and wine tastings, along with panel discussions involving the show’s cast and crew. Attendees also explored filming locations on the Island, including Montgomery’s birthplace, gravesite, and the iconic Cavendish house that served as inspiration for “Anne of Green Gables.”

Edward Lemon, assistant director of Fine Book Fairs, noted that the enduring appeal of the show lies in its ability to provide an escape and embody values of kindness, friendship, and camaraderie. He expressed hope that “Road to Avonlea” would continue to engage new audiences in the future.

Ruffman, reflecting on the convention, remarked on the profound connection fans have with the show. She admitted to occasionally pondering about her character, Olivia, even after all these years.

Czajka revealed that she is now rewatching the series with her three children, emphasizing the rarity of finding a show that can be enjoyed by both parents and kids together. She expressed her delight in sharing the nostalgic experience with her family.
