A tragic incident unfolded as a family from Chignautla in Puebla State, Mexico, found themselves trapped in a cave for two days following flash floods triggered by heavy rain. The Peña family, on a birthday outing, along with a guide, were exploring the Chichicazapan cave in Cuetzalan when rising waters from intense rainfall forced them further into the cave system, rendering escape impossible.
Sadly, one family member, Gerardo Julián de los Santos, lost his life in the ordeal, while three others remain missing after the group was swept deeper into the cave. Despite the challenging conditions, three individuals, including Araceli Antonio Peña and Agustín Julián, were able to reach safety on the first day.
Search efforts have been ongoing, hampered by adverse weather conditions and safety concerns for rescue teams. Cuetzalan, known for its heavy rainfall, poses risks of rapid underground water surges, complicating rescue operations.
Araceli, speaking about the incident, expressed disbelief at the unexpected flooding while recounting the guide’s advice to seek shelter inside the cave to avoid getting wet. The guide, employed by Destino de Aventura, received medical attention and has since been discharged.
Rescue operations, involving specialized teams like divers and speleologists, have been repeatedly paused due to safety risks posed by ongoing rain. Authorities emphasize resuming operations only during safe weather conditions. Reports indicate that the tourists were equipped with basic gear like life jackets and helmets, lacking advanced safety equipment.
The family had embarked on the trip to celebrate their youngest daughter’s 21st birthday and fulfill her desire to explore the caves.
