In Italy, a family dog tragically lost its life while protecting a toddler from a wolf attack. Destiny, a seven-year-old crossbreed dog weighing about 22kg, bravely intervened when a wolf threatened the two-year-old boy in the family’s garden in Tuscany.
The heroic act occurred as the boy was playing with Destiny in the unfenced garden while his parents, Paula and Tommaso, were preparing a barbecue at their home in Orbicciano. The wolf, estimated to weigh 60-70kg, targeted the child, prompting Destiny to courageously confront the predator, despite being described as typically timid by her owners.
Tommaso expressed gratitude for Destiny’s bravery, stating that she saved both him and his son. Paula recounted the heartbreaking scene of the wolf seizing Destiny in its jaws and carrying her away into the woods like prey. Despite their efforts to locate Destiny, the darkness and the presence of the wolf deterred them from retrieving her body immediately.
By morning, Destiny’s remains were found with only her head, a paw, and tail remaining. The family, who had recently moved into their dream home, had adopted Destiny as a puppy seven years ago after she was abandoned.
Reflecting on the incident, Paula emphasized Destiny’s role in protecting not only their son but also other children in the vicinity. Local authorities investigated the incident following several wolf sightings near residential areas, prompting concerns from environmental groups about the increasing wolf population in Tuscany and the need for measures to safeguard rural communities.
