“Fairground AI Debuts on Roku Channel, Faces Viewer Criticisms”

Artificial intelligence has ventured into the realm of entertainment, now boasting its own channel on the widely-used streaming platform, the Roku Channel.

Fairground AI Creator TV, offering round-the-clock, AI-generated content for free, silently joined Roku’s lineup without an official announcement from the streaming platform. The initial report on this addition came from Cord Cutters News.

However, the reception from online audiences suggests a potential shift in viewership preferences away from the AI channel. Criticisms surfaced, with Frank Landymore of Futurism describing Roku’s move as providing an endless stream of undesirable AI content.

Bradly Shankar from MobileSyrup echoed similar sentiments, highlighting Roku’s presence in an overcrowded and increasingly costly streaming market, hinting at an impending decline in quality.

Fairground AI operates as a FAST channel, offering ad-supported streaming television at no cost. While Canada hosts around 200 FAST channels on the Roku Channel, Fairground AI is currently absent from this list. The company has not disclosed any plans regarding the channel’s availability in Canada.

Roku, a prominent player in the streaming industry, garnered attention when Fox sealed a massive $22 billion deal to acquire the company in June, granting access to over 100 million households globally.

The emergence of AI-generated content is on the rise, with Tribeca Festival featuring an AI-generated movie earlier this year and Hasbro announcing plans to introduce AI-powered versions of its iconic characters. As AI content gains traction, human web traffic is witnessing a decline against AI, as per internet data insights.

Fairground AI’s CEO, Colin Petrie-Norris, anticipates a trajectory akin to YouTube’s evolution for the AI channel. Despite skepticism, he believes in the transformative potential of AI creators, drawing parallels to the success of YouTube personalities.

Fenwick McKelvey, an expert in information and communication technology policy, sees Roku’s adoption of an AI channel as a cost-effective strategy to boost platform engagement. He speculates on viewers’ acceptance of the channel, suggesting it could serve as a dynamic screensaver for some users.

Notably, the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission updated its definition of Canadian content last year, excluding fully AI-generated content. McKelvey raises concerns about unaddressed issues surrounding AI-generated content, including compliance with copyright laws and privacy regulations.

Lastly, the debate around AI’s impact on the entertainment industry persists, with calls for more stringent regulations from organizations like the Alliance of Canadian Cinema, Television and Radio Artists. Questions linger regarding fair compensation for artists and the prioritization of economic gains over social considerations in the AI landscape.
