Video game giant Electronic Arts (EA) is closing down BioWare, a renowned game development studio based in Edmonton, after over 30 years of operation. The closure was confirmed by BioWare on social media following reports of significant layoffs, with around 50 employees affected at the studio out of a total of 400 job cuts.
The cancellation of the highly anticipated fifth installment of the Mass Effect series was also disclosed by BioWare. The studio, which was established in 1995 and later acquired by EA in 2007, expressed sadness over the end of an era, as co-founder Trent Oster described it as a poignant moment, reflecting on the journey that began decades ago.
EA recently finalized a $55 billion deal selling its business to various entities, including Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund PIF, investment firm Silver Lake Partners, and Affinity Partners, a firm linked to Jared Kushner, son-in-law of former U.S. President Donald Trump.
Despite numerous successful releases like Battlefield and The Sims, BioWare faced challenges with its more recent projects, such as the multiplayer shooter Anthem in 2019, which deviated from its traditional strength in crafting engaging single-player narratives. The studio’s efforts to diversify its portfolio did not resonate with the gaming community as expected, leading to a decline in audience engagement compared to popular online titles like Fortnite and Overwatch.
BioWare’s legacy is deeply rooted in its immersive role-playing experiences, ranging from fantasy epics like Baldur’s Gate and Dragon Age to sci-fi adventures like Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and Mass Effect. The studio’s journey from a small team to a global powerhouse was marked by Oster as an incredible experience, despite the ultimate outcome.
The closure of BioWare comes after the mixed reception of recent installments in its flagship franchises, with Mass Effect: Andromeda in 2017 and Dragon Age: The Veilguard in 2024 failing to meet expectations. Although a new Mass Effect project was in the works, the studio’s closure has put an end to its development.
Throughout its history, BioWare has been celebrated for creating worlds that players embraced, characters they loved, and choices they debated. The studio’s impact on the gaming industry will be remembered as a chapter in gaming history that has now come to a bittersweet conclusion.
