A dog boarder who neglected a family pet leading to its death was given a suspended prison sentence. Charlotte Sutton, 26, left the dog, named Hero, unattended for an extended period while running an unlicensed home dog boarding service. Despite warnings from Braintree District Council, Sutton continued to operate illegally. She was prosecuted and found guilty of causing unnecessary suffering to an animal and conducting an unlicensed boarding business.
Sutton received a 26-week suspended prison sentence, was ordered to perform 150 hours of unpaid work, pay £10,000 towards prosecution costs, and a £154 victim surcharge. The owner of the deceased dog, Leighanne Ship, expressed gratitude to the council for pursuing justice. Ship emphasized the importance of using licensed animal boarding services and the responsibility of caring for others’ pets. She hoped that sharing their experience would prevent other families from enduring similar heartbreak and stress.
The incident occurred nearly two years ago, with the court process taking time to reach a conclusion. Ship stated that though nothing could bring Hero back, obtaining justice and closure was significant. She highlighted the need for proper care and respect when looking after beloved pets, underscoring the lasting impact of responsible pet ownership.
