“Crazy Rich Asians” Sequel Greenlit as HBO Series

After the success of “Crazy Rich Asians” at the box office as a groundbreaking moment for Asian representation in Hollywood, the story is set to return to screens as an HBO series eight years later. The upcoming eight-episode, one-hour drama will continue from where the 2018 film left off. Constance Wu, Henry Golding, and Ronny Chieng will reprise their roles as series regulars, with Michelle Yeoh returning as a recurring character. Production is scheduled to commence in 2027.

Adapted from Kevin Kwan’s bestselling novels, the series will be spearheaded by Adele Lim, co-writer of the film. Jon M. Chu, the director, along with producers Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson, will also return as executive producers. The series will be a joint collaboration between HBO and Warner Bros. Television.

Lim expressed excitement about the series, stating that the eight episodes will allow for a deeper exploration of characters and settings. However, specific storylines from the books that will be adapted have not been disclosed yet.

The original film follows Rachel, played by Wu, an economics professor from New York who discovers her boyfriend Nick, played by Golding, is part of one of Singapore’s wealthiest families. Yeoh portrays Nick’s imposing mother, Eleanor, while Chieng plays his cousin Eddie.

Director Jon M. Chu, reflecting on the news, humorously quoted a famous line from the film through Awkwafina’s character, Goh Peik Lin, indicating the long-awaited sequel’s arrival.

The announcement has answered fans’ lingering question about what comes next for Rachel and Nick. For Toronto entertainment blogger Will Wong, who attended the film’s Toronto premiere in 2018, this news signifies a reunion with old friends, as he has closely followed the cast and story since then.

Upon its initial release, “Crazy Rich Asians” was a significant breakthrough, boasting the first all-Asian cast in a major Hollywood film in over two decades. The romantic comedy, with a reported budget of $30 million US, grossed over $239 million US, making it the highest-grossing Hollywood studio romantic comedy at the North American box office in almost ten years.

Wong, emphasizing his pride in his Asian heritage, commended the film for offering a unique perspective on the Asian American experience, acknowledging the need for more diverse stories in that realm. The series has the potential to build on the film’s success and audience attachment to its characters.

The format of a television series may provide an extended platform for the world of “Crazy Rich Asians” to unfold. Author Kevin Kwan expressed his delight at seeing the characters return in a series, calling it a dream come true and thanking fans for their patience.

Wong hopes the show will pave the way for more opportunities for Asian talent in the industry, emphasizing the importance of providing platforms for writers, directors, actors, and other creatives. He remains optimistic about the series’ success and its potential impact in breaking barriers and driving progress in the industry.
