Chinese students have undergone specialized training in China, dubbed as “ICE camps,” to prepare them for life in the United States. These young individuals, gearing up for studies at American universities, engaged in rigorous programs to equip themselves with skills to handle various challenges, including potential encounters with US immigration authorities. These privately organized courses arose due to growing concerns among parents about crime rates in American cities and stricter immigration policies.
During the training, students simulated scenarios such as facing kidnappings, robberies, telephone scams, hate crimes, racism, and interactions with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers. The aim was to enhance their preparedness and awareness in unfamiliar situations. Despite the unsettling nature of these exercises, one student expressed feeling more vigilant and prepared after the training.
Despite apprehensions, the US remained the top choice for Chinese students pursuing international degrees, followed by the UK and Australia. Although the number of Chinese students attending American universities slightly decreased from its peak, the allure of Western education and the opportunity to practice English continued to attract them. Chinese educational narratives often emphasize the perceived dangers and disparities in American society compared to China’s more regulated environment.
Recent incidents involving Chinese scholars facing deportation or detainment in the US, coupled with political tensions between the two countries, have fueled parental concerns. The Chinese government has responded by offering pre-departure training to students on government-funded programs and issuing travel advisories, specifically cautioning those heading to the US about potential challenges with immigration officials.
In parallel, the UK has seen a steady flow of Chinese students, partly driven by parental concerns shifting away from the US due to recent events. This trend has been noticeable since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic. The proactive measures taken by Chinese authorities and the increased interest in UK education reflect the evolving dynamics of international student mobility.
