With summer in full swing across the United Kingdom, the recent weeks have seen delightful weather. As we anticipate more sunny days ahead, now is the perfect time to plan a seaside getaway or two.
The UK boasts numerous stunning coastal destinations, and while the heatwaves have been enjoyable, the unpredictable nature of British weather is well-known.
One particular destination that stands out for its lively summer atmosphere without being overcrowded is Largs, a charming seaside town on the west coast of Scotland, just an hour’s drive from Glasgow. Known for its Viking museum, traditional amusement arcades, and ferry connections to the Isle of Cumbrae, Largs is a popular spot for many Scots during the warmer months.
Situated on the Firth of Clyde, Largs offers everything you could desire for a coastal retreat, including a variety of accommodation options. We had the pleasure of staying at the Old Rectory, a beautiful holiday home accommodating up to 14 guests, complete with a hot tub and ample space for relaxation. One of the highlights of Largs is its proximity to the waterfront from any location.
The Victorian seafront in Largs is bustling with attractions and activities, featuring a diverse range of dining options from traditional fish and chips to delectable Thai cuisine.
Aside from its Viking heritage, Largs is also renowned for its art deco ice cream parlour, Nardini’s, a beloved café in Scotland known for its welcoming ambiance and exceptional ice cream. Positioned by the waterfront, Nardini’s is the ideal spot to savor a scoop of your favorite flavor while enjoying the scenic views.
Exploring the town center reveals quaint narrow streets lined with independent shops, cafes, and more ice cream parlors. For a delightful brunch experience, we visited Perk, a vibrant café adorned with plants and books, offering a superb menu.
While Largs may lack major retail chains, it compensates with a charming array of independent stores offering unique items. A bustling market tent showcases vendors selling a variety of goods, from organic dog food to handmade jewelry and tarot readings.
For those seeking further adventure, a short ferry ride from Largs harbor to the Isle of Cumbrae leads to the quaint town of Millport. The island is small enough to explore by bike in a couple of hours, with a well-deserved pint awaiting at the end before returning to the mainland.
Not far from Largs, the impressive Kelburn Castle boasts a picturesque park and estate hosting a summer music festival. Families will also find plenty of attractions on the island, including playgrounds and waterfalls, all within a short drive from Largs. However, Largs itself offers a plethora of activities to keep visitors entertained, whether for a day trip or a weekend getaway.
Whether visited on a sunny day or during wet weather, Largs provides a refreshing seaside experience, with invigorating walks and enticing ice cream parlors enhancing the charm of the town.
