Rachel Reeves, the Chancellor, is preparing to introduce a significant enhancement for small businesses in one of her final actions in office. During her upcoming Mansion House speech, she will reveal an extension of financial aid for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), potentially unlocking billions in support.
The key initiative involves expanding the Government guarantee on commercial loans for SMEs, with the aim of facilitating borrowing for British businesses to foster growth. The Growth Guarantee Scheme (GGS) will now offer a 70% government guarantee on loans to small businesses, having already disbursed over £3.7 billion to SMEs since its inception in 2022.
Under the Chancellor’s proposals, the scheme will see a £6.5 billion increase, projected to benefit 33,000 businesses across the UK over the next three years. Additionally, the loan term will be extended from six to ten years, and businesses with turnovers of up to £54 million will now be eligible, up from the previous threshold of £45 million.
Rachel Reeves emphasized the significance of supporting small businesses, stating, “Our economic strategy has strengthened Britain by restoring stability, encouraging investment, and implementing reforms. Small businesses are vital to our economy and regional growth. Today’s reforms mark a significant milestone in unleashing their potential and driving collective success.”
In a separate development, the Chancellor urged Andy Burnham to have a well-thought-out plan for governing the country as he prepares to assume office at 10 Downing Street. Reeves emphasized the challenges of governance in Britain and the importance of being prepared for potential obstacles.
