“British Soldier Killed in Iraq Training Incident”

A 29-year-old British soldier, Lance Corporal James Freeman from the Royal Anglian Regiment, tragically lost his life in a training incident that occurred at an air base in Erbil, a Kurdish region in northern Iraq. The Ministry of Defence confirmed the news, mentioning that the incident took place during routine training within Operation Shader, the UK’s campaign against the Islamic State.

Alongside L/Cpl Freeman, an American soldier also lost their life in the training accident, as reported by the US Army through a tweet. The MoD expressed deep regret over the incident, stating that the soldier’s family had been notified and requested privacy before further details were disclosed.

Described as a dedicated and experienced soldier with a promising future, Freeman had served in various locations, including South Sudan, Cyprus, the Falklands, and others. The Defence Secretary expressed profound sadness over Freeman’s passing, extending condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues during this challenging time.

Lieutenant Samuel Frost, Freeman’s Platoon Commander, praised him as an outstanding soldier and expressed sorrow over his untimely death. Corporal William Thorpe, Freeman’s close friend, shared heartfelt memories of their bond and highlighted Freeman’s professionalism and support.

The identity of the American soldier who also perished in the incident has not been revealed to the public yet. The loss of these soldiers has deeply impacted their units and loved ones, leaving a somber atmosphere of remembrance and mourning.
